I am an independent educator who has recently left teaching in the New York City public high schools after 21 years. I use the word paideia to express the idea that education is always a spiritual enterprise. The word hearkens back to the Peloponnesian War when Greek culture and civilization entered its ultimate crisis. Out of that crisis came the concept of paideia, which, in the words of Werner Jaeger, came to mean a conscious ideal of education and culture.  These pages are meant to develop the same idea in the context of our increasingly intertwined global economy and culture.
